The Roundtable Reports

The New Comen Roundtable
by Sandy Frazier

11 November, 2003 , New York City --The Algonquin Roundtable of the Roaring Twenties was nowhere to be found at O'Lunney's Irish Pub in the middle of Times Square , New York City on Monday night, but instead the new group was reincarnated as the new Comen Roundtable.  This new " Compassionate Circle " was once again an eclectic mix of creative and passionate people who love to socialize and converse.

We arrived on time to a pleasant rearrangement of our "roundtable" - our rectangular version made for a warmer, cozier nook for the roundtablers to banter and quip.  Founder Howie Comen greeted us with his usual playful winks and jibes.  It was nice to see Richard and Jana snuggling in the corner; the nuptials quickly approaching, they're one foot out the door to the Czech Republic so he will meet her family.  Richard showed us his new cowboy boots inspired by John Frazier, charter member, already back in Houston and starting the ball rolling on his fledgling company Rollin' Films.  John called us, on his way to Nashville for the Johnny Cash Memorial Tribute, during this second roundtable dinner and wanted us to think of him as there in spirit.  He was soon to be on his way to New Orleans for a 3-day video shoot.

It was wonderful that John and Sandy's kid sister Tami (a/k/a zerofische) was visiting Sandy in New York and able to attend.  She was a bright and welcome addition and, incidentally, the talented creator of the original Comen International Web site.

Some of the charter members, Dr. Braak and Dr. Samuels, had e-mailed us to send their regrets that they couldn't make it this time... and sent their best.  But it was terrific to see the return of Carl Limbacher and some great friends of NewsMax - Steve Kivlen of Koeppel Tener Real Estate Services and Fr. Mike Reilly who was ordained a Roman Catholic priest by John Cardinal O'Connor in 1992 and is currently serving as Dean at St. Joseph by-the-Sea High School in Staten Island , New York .  Father opened the evening with a prayer at the request of Howie - "non-dimensional."  Later, Carl, Father Mike, Sandy and Steve Kivlen discussed attending the 2004 RNC.  Should be a highly charged time in NYC next year as the RNC will be at MSG!

Tony and Sue La Magra arrived - he, professor of music and concert pianist; she a piano teacher who is also enchanted with Dickens and is a new member of the New York chapter of the Friends of Dickens.  Soon a fascinating conversation began as Sandy Frazier told the stories of she and her mother, Elizabeth Baron's visit to the Octagon Tower on Roosevelt Island and how Nelly Bly and Charles Dickens visited the Island and the Lunatic Asylum. [To read what Dickens wrote after his visit, click here.]

Anthony La Magra, a retired director of music at Manhattanville College in Purchase, NY livened the conversation with his passion as a concert pianist and promised to keep us posted on his upcoming concerts.  We soon found out Tony is a hi-tech musician, up-to-date on all the latest composing programs and he also dabbles in photography.  He performs at the State University of NY and his dissertation, to the pleasant surprise of Sandy , was on the great Sergei Rachmaninov.

Tami was excited to find a common bond with Tony and his love of photography; her own recent foray into the world of photography with her partner, Pierce, has proven to be very productive and has brought out a great talent.  She's discovered a real eye for artistic design in photorealism.  Sandy and Tami spent the past week roaming the far reaches of Long Island , Brooklyn and even the desolate Coney Island for subject matter.  Tami's series of photos of abandoned churches and "juke joints" of South Carolina 's backroads are amazing... but her self-portraits are the most intense of all - mini biopics filled with emotion and ambient moods.

Howie addressed the lively bunch, was witty and charming... yet some of the roundtablers noticed he'd forgotten to wear his Red Sox cap.  Carl Limbacher reminded us that Howie had worn his cap in one of the poshest hotels in D.C. and so our fearless leader was forced to re-don his trademark apparel - the infamous Red Sox cap.

Howie started by reminding us of some of the history of the original Algonquin Roundtable as Carl interjected the concepts of the group of infamous writers, delving into the who's who.  He brought out some of the first edition books he'd found on e-bay that were written by or about some of the early roundtablers of the Algonquin years and the conversation about some of the more notorious members was interesting.  Carl Limbacher and Sandy Frazier mentioned their good friend, radio legend, George Putnam and how he'd known Algonquin attendee Tallulah Bankhead.  Carl familiarized some of the younger roundtablers with the character on the old Mary Tyler Moore show that was modeled after George.  We're all hoping George will one day fly out from his ranch in Chino to NYC to join us at the roundtable!

Howie gave us all an update on the Princeton Club Librarians' Collaboration on a Project to Benefit Afghanistan: At the first O'Lunney's Times Square/Comen International  Roundtable held in October,  Dr. Joyce Braak, President of the Institute for Research on Women's Health, Princeton Club Librarians Betty Dornheim, Doris Humphrey, the retired Connie Clark and the Comen International Detective Agency family developed the Afghan Relief Effort (A.R.E.) to replace the Afghanistan university libraries' books the Taliban destroyed during their reign. Lt. Col Chris King, information officer of the U.S. Air Force Airlift Wing, Charleston , SC , put Comen in touch with the administrators of the Denton Amendment, federal legislation that empowers the Air Force to assist in the airlift of aid to Afghanistan . Forms are being filled out to get things underway to airlift the books. Cultural requirements and the distribution logistics in Afghanistan are being developed as well. Comen International C.O.O. Richard Wellington has been pursuing our initial goal of 2,500 books and has commitments of over 500 thus far. Any Comen International State Directors and all Intelnet Major Case Squad members that would like to get involved with the Afghan Relief Effort should contact Howie.

Soon radio legend Barry Farber arrived and was able to enjoy wonderful conversation with Howie and the La Magias; and then Barry explained that he had to leave a little early since he'd been asked to guest host for the ailing Roy Masters who is recovering from open-heart surgery. Listen Live Online to Barry Farber this Saturday night (11/22/03) 8:00pm ET - the June Cain Miller Show will re-air their amazing interview: http://www.krla870.com/

The conversation turned metaphysical as Howie and Sandy were talking to Steve Kivlen about Elizabeth Baron... and then Steve made a prediction: within two years there will be a worldwide event where everyone will see their soul as God sees them: an intervention.  Father Mike interjected, "It's called 'Judgment Day.'  We hope that doesn't come to soon... we're having too much fun at the roundtable!

Special Roundtable Note: The Comen Roundtablers would like to send out condolences to the friends and family of Art Carney... "So long, Norton, ol' buddy!  We'll miss you!"
